International University donated $27,887 to Holmes Elementary School, a Miami-Dade County Public School, (M-DCPS) in support of Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation’s philanthropic cause of “school and college readiness.” Located in Miami, Florida, Holmes Elementary School is a Title I M-DCPS school serving over 325 students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. This generous donation will help fund a technology room, providing students the opportunity to do research on state-of-the-art computers, as well as provide a space for standardized testing on computers. The rest of the funds will be used to purchase extra uniforms for students who were unable to purchase a uniform due to financial difficulty and to provide school-wide incentives, helping to drive motivation and student involvement. On October 18, sisters of the Delta Kappa Chapter presented Holmes Elementary School with the donation at a school-wide assembly.
“We are incredibly proud of our Delta Kappa Chapter! Year after year they demonstrate a strong commitment to philanthropic causes through significant fundraising efforts and giving back to their local community,” said Grand Archon Tess Stovall. “We recognize the impact and importance of education, particularly in the formative years, and are proud to provide support through the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation’s Community Impact Fund. With this grant, the Delta Kappa Chapter is able to support their local community and witness the impact education can have in the lives of young students.”
In spring 2023, the Delta Kappa Chapter hosted its annual Mr. King Blue and Gold event, a week-long fundraising competition where contestants from Florida International University’s fraternities compete, help raise funds for the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation and spread awareness about school and college readiness. This event broke Florida International University’s philanthropic fundraising record. Through the Phi Sigma Sigma Foundation’s Community Impact Grant, the chapter is able to leverage these funds to give back directly to their community and support their local partner, Holmes Elementary School.
In recognition of their impact within their community, the Delta Kappa Chapter received Phi Sigma Sigma’s 2022-2023 Collegiate Chapter Philanthropic Impact Award. This award is presented to the chapter that has had an impact on their campus and community through their volunteer time and/or charitable endeavors.
